Lakes and Marinas
Many thousands of years ago, glaciers scraped along the continent carving their way through the Alexandria Lakes Area and leaving a landscape with hundreds of lakes and open prairie. Hardwood trees and conifers filled in the landscape and domestic agriculture found its way to fertile land. Later, hardy Viking explorers traversed the beautiful lakes area leaving their mark long before the Europeans claimed being here first.
The biggest attraction for travelers and vacationers remains the lakes around Alexandria and they are some of the finest in a state with more than 15,000 lakes (in spite of what the license plates proclaim!). Some are huge bodies of water that once featured small packet boats and paddlewheelers to portage travelers from shore to shore and around the perimeters. Small lakes offer a quieter retreat while keeping up the reputation of the area for great fishing.
