Chamber History

The beginnings of the Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria span more than 100 years. Taking their cue from the well-established community, business and industry leaders formed a coalition to strengthen the foundation for economic vitality in the early part of the 20th century.

The Chamber established its first charter in March 1907 and in the ensuing century has been the driving force behind the continued progress and growth of Alexandria and surrounding area of Douglas County and beyond.

The Chamber has weathered the strains of economic variances through financial and political hard times to emerge as a continuing leader in the quality of life and living for its residents and the members of the business community.

Membership has grown from the early days of representing only the commercial concerns of the community and now encompass all categories of “doing business in Alex” and includes retail and wholesale markets, manufacturing, utilities, transportation, public services, communication and telecommunications, retail and wholesale trades, education, agri-business, construction, hospitality and tourism, government agencies, recreation and leisure industries, financial and insurance groups, resorts and hotels, professional and management firms, real estate, and social service organizations
